Who Owns the Next Move?
Activity is not the same as ownership.
A pattern worth noticing
Cash getting tight rarely comes from one big event.
It usually comes from a pattern. Small delays. Missing details. Unclear ownership.
The good news? Patterns can be seen. And what can be seen can be improved.
The signal
The workaround is a signal.
Not an accusation. Not “your process is broken.” A signal.
When capable people repeatedly have to remember, chase, double-check, or create their own workaround, it’s telling us something.
Call to get an update. Check the portal again. Send a follow-up email. Text for approval. Ask someone who knows. These steps keep work moving, but they are not the process.
One conversation this week
Ask the people closest to the work.
Where are good people working around the process just to keep the work moving? Don’t start by asking who is doing something wrong.
- What keeps requiring an extra reminder?
- What information are we repeatedly chasing?
- Where are people creating their own way to get something across the finish line?
Choose one recurring workaround and ask: “What would make this easier to do right the first time?”
You don’t need to redesign the whole system this week. Improve one place where the work is asking for a better process.
The BlackOX question
What are your best people carrying that a better system should carry for them?
Good systems don’t replace good people. They give good people more room to do their best work.
Final thought
What strong systems make possible.
Growth doesn’t always ask good people to work harder. Sometimes it asks the business to build better around them.
When the system carries more, your people have more room to do the work only people can do.
Strong people deserve systems strong enough to support them.
